Simply put…you are!
And this answer is almost always followed by the second common question: Who is ‘you’?

In terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, every employer is required to provide, as far as reasonably practicable, a hazardous-free working space for his/her employees. Of course, this can be interpreted in a number of ways, but it boils down to key components that ensure the employer provides the necessary safe and healthy working environment.

As a business owner the onus is therefore on you to do everything reasonably practicable to ensure that any tools your staff are using are safe to work with, and that all necessary measures are in place to guarantee the responsible and appropriate usage thereof.

These measures represent the first line of defence as it relates to a safe work environment, and they can only be implemented successfully if all the stakeholders comprehend the risk or potential risk involved with each specific job function. Understanding these risks necessitates a full and proper risk assessment being done which determines their nature and severity.

Once the risks are understood, you as an employer need to ensure that each staff member understands the required safety protocols, and receives and applies the appropriate training, which may involve components such as first aid, firefighting, emergency protocols and representative training.

Proper training is vital to a healthy and safe environment, and once provided, and with the suitable safety procedures put in place, it becomes the employer’s responsibility to see to it that the relevant rules, regulations and protocols are followed.

This is the best way to ensure that potentially devastating mishaps never occur in the work place. Safety Solutions Africa is an industry leader in the understanding, management and ongoing training pertaining to occupational health and safety. It is this understanding that differentiates us as consultants, able to assist our clients in deploying this knowledge to deliver real cost savings in business insurance and in operating costs purely through correct implementation of safety protocols.
